Three people, including a college student, have died following two separate road traffic accidents on the Jesore–Khulna Highway in the Abhaynagar Upazila of Jesore. Another individual sustained severe injuries and remains under medical care.
The first tragic event unfolded on Tuesday night (3 November) at approximately 10:00 pm in the Urotola area near Chengutia. According to local sources and the police, Abdullah Al Apon, 22, had gone out for a motorcycle ride with his friend, 28-year-old Al-Amin. Apon, an HSC second-year student at Pairahat United College and the son of Obaidul Kader from Buikara village, was riding the motorcycle when an oncoming lorry crashed into them head-on.
Both young men suffered critical injuries in the impact. Local bystanders rushed to the scene to assist, transferring the victims to Gazi Medical College Hospital in Khulna for urgent treatment. Apon succumbed to his injuries early on Wednesday morning (4 November) while undergoing intensive care.
Hours later, on Wednesday morning at around 8:00 am, a second fatal collision occurred in Masharhati village, adjacent to the Bhairab Bridge on the same highway. A passenger bus operated by Shohag Paribahan collided head-on with a battery-driven van. The violent crash crushed the light vehicle, severely injuring both the driver and a passenger.
First responders quickly transported the casualties to the Abhaynagar Upazila Health Complex. However, attending physicians pronounced both men dead upon arrival. The deceased were identified as the van driver, Abdul Wahab, 55, son of Haidar Ali, and passenger Abdus Samad Biswas, 50, son of Abdul Moin Biswas. Both victims were residents of Deyapara village within the upazila.
Confirming the casualties, Saiful Islam, Officer-in-Charge of the Nowapara Highway Police Station, stated that law enforcement officers inspected both crash sites immediately following the incidents. He noted that formal legal proceedings regarding the collisions are currently underway, whilst authorities assess the circumstances surrounding the crashes.
Highway accidents along the busy transport corridors of south-western Bangladesh remain a persistent public safety concern. Heavy commercial transport, high speeds, and the mixed presence of slow-moving local vehicles on trunk routes like the Jesore–Khulna Highway regularly contribute to severe hazards for commuters and residents alike.
