Indian Medical Student Found Dead Near Campus Waterbody in Cumilla

Police in Cumilla’s Burichang upazila have recovered the body of an Indian medical student from a waterbody adjacent to the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway, two days after he went missing. The deceased, identified as Adnan Altaf, was a student at Eastern Medical College located in the Kabila area of the upazila.

The recovery took place on Wednesday morning, approximately 500 yards away from the private medical college campus. Adnan, who hailed from the Bunpara Dangalpara area of Sopore in the Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, India, was the son of Altaf Hussain Rather.

According to details provided by his family, Adnan stepped out of the Eastern Medical College campus around 11:36 pm on Monday to visit a local eatery serving Indian cuisine. He was last seen at approximately 12:05 am before mysteriously disappearing. When he failed to return to his residence, his family launched an urgent search, issuing missing person notices and contacting local law enforcement. A general diary was subsequently lodged with Burichang Police Station.

Addressing the media, Shah Md. Salim, Chairman of Eastern Medical College, stated that Adnan had been struggling with psychological health issues for some time. To ensure his well-being and safety, special arrangements had been approved to allow his mother to reside alongside him within the campus premises. Despite these measures, he walked out of the campus late on Monday night and did not return.

Lutfur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of Burichang Police Station, confirmed that police officers commenced a search operation immediately after receiving the missing person complaint. On Wednesday morning, local residents spotted a body floating in the roadside waterbody and alerted the authorities. A police team responded promptly to retrieve the body, which was later identified as that of the missing Indian student.

The police have dispatched the body to the morgue at Cumilla Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Law enforcement officials noted that comprehensive investigations are underway to determine the precise cause of death and establish whether foul play was involved in the tragedy.
