At just 15 years of age, Vaibhav Suryavanshi has already become a significant talking point ahead of India’s three-match T20I series against Afghanistan. Despite his youth, the left-handed opener has done enough in recent months to force the opposition to prepare specifically for him.
Afghanistan will face India in the opening T20I today, with Shreyas Iyer leading the Indian side. Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Afghanistan captain Ibrahim Zadran admitted that his team cannot afford to underestimate Vaibhav simply because of his age.
The Afghan camp has been working on ways to restrict the teenager, combining video analysis with the experience of players who have faced him in the Indian Premier League. Zadran described Vaibhav as an “incredible talent” and said the team had discussed how best to deal with his attacking batting.
Several members of Afghanistan’s squad have encountered Vaibhav during the IPL, giving the team access to first-hand information about his approach at the crease. Their experience has been used alongside footage of his performances as the Afghan management looks to develop a practical plan for the young opener.
“We have watched his video clips,” Zadran said, while stressing that Afghanistan did not want to make the strategy unnecessarily complicated. The captain’s preference is to keep the plan simple and ensure that the players execute it properly once the match begins.
That approach reflects the challenge posed by a young batter who has already attracted attention across different levels of the game. Vaibhav made a name for himself on the IPL stage, but his recent performances in red-ball cricket have also strengthened his reputation as a player with broader abilities.
In the recently concluded Duleep Trophy, Vaibhav scored 192 runs in five innings for East Zone. His contribution in the semi-final against Central Zone was particularly notable, as he made 92 runs in an innings that helped put his side on the path to victory.
His performance in the longer format has added another dimension to his profile. While T20 cricket remains the format in which he has attracted considerable attention, his Duleep Trophy campaign showed that his batting can also be effective in a more demanding red-ball setting.
Vaibhav now returns to the T20 format, where his aggressive approach and ability to score quickly make him an obvious focus for Afghanistan’s bowlers. As an opener, he has the opportunity to influence the game from the earliest stages of an innings, making the opening exchanges particularly important for both sides.
For Afghanistan, however, the series is about more than trying to contain one emerging Indian star. It is also an important test for Zadran, who has taken over the T20 captaincy from Rashid Khan.
Zadran acknowledged the responsibility that comes with leading the side but said he was enjoying the challenge. He believes one of the most important aspects of captaincy is remaining calm during difficult moments and making the right decisions under pressure.
Afghanistan will look to make the most of familiar conditions and produce their best cricket against India. Zadran believes that if his side can perform at its level, the series could become a memorable one for the team.
Much of the attention before the opening match, though, will remain on Vaibhav. The fact that Afghanistan have already studied his batting, consulted players who have faced him and reviewed video footage underlines the impression he has made at such a young age.
The teenager will now have the chance to respond where it matters most — on the field. Whether Afghanistan’s carefully prepared plans can contain him will be one of the intriguing subplots of the opening T20I.
