A 50-year-old scrap dealer was found dead in a sack in Sonargaon, Narayanganj, a day after he reportedly went missing. Police recovered the body of Ayub Hossain with his hands and feet tied from an overgrown, abandoned area behind the Jalalabad Medicine Company in the Kanchpur area of Kanchpur Union on Wednesday morning.
The discovery was made at around 10.30am after local residents spotted a sack floating in a pond beside Ayub’s scrap warehouse. Finding the circumstances suspicious, they informed Sonargaon police, who went to the spot and recovered the sack.
When the sack was opened, police found Ayub’s body inside with his hands and feet tied. Officers subsequently sent the body to the morgue at Narayanganj General Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Police have detained a security guard named Jamil Hossain for questioning in connection with the incident. Investigators are seeking to establish how Ayub died, when he was killed and whether anyone else was involved.
Ayub, son of Altaf Hossain, lived in the Uttarpara area of Kanchpur. He was locally involved in the scrap business and operated a warehouse in the area. He is survived by his wife, a son and two daughters.
Family members and local residents said Ayub had been missing since Tuesday night. His relatives searched for him in several places but were unable to locate him. Police said, however, that they had not been informed of his disappearance before the body was discovered.
The location of the recovery has also become a focus of the investigation because the body was found close to the victim’s scrap warehouse. Officers are examining the surrounding area and gathering information from people who may have seen or heard anything unusual around the time Ayub went missing.
Narayanganj Additional Superintendent of Police for the ‘Kha’ Circle Dipankar Ghosh and Sonargaon Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Abdul Bariq visited the scene after the body was recovered. They inspected the area and discussed the circumstances of the incident with officers involved in the investigation.
Sonargaon police said there were visible injury marks on the body. The post-mortem examination is expected to provide further information about the nature of the injuries and the circumstances of Ayub’s death.
Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Abdul Bariq said the security guard had been detained and was being questioned as part of the investigation. He also said police had not previously been aware that Ayub was missing because no one had informed the station about his disappearance.
Investigators are now looking into Ayub’s movements before he went missing, his activities around the warehouse and his contacts during the final hours before his disappearance. They are also questioning people in the area and assessing any information that could help establish a sequence of events.
No definitive motive for the death has yet been established, and police have not said that the detained security guard has been charged in connection with the killing. His detention is for questioning while the investigation continues.
The recovery of the body has prompted a wider investigation into what happened between Ayub’s disappearance on Tuesday night and the discovery of his body on Wednesday morning. Police said further details are expected to emerge as questioning, evidence collection and the post-mortem examination progress.
