The Local Government Division under the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives issued an official notification in this regard on Thursday, 17 September. Senior Assistant Secretary Aktarun Nesa of the Water Supply-3 section within the Local Government Division signed the gazette.

According to the official circular, the appointment has been executed under Section 7(1) of the Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (Amendment) Act, 2026. Under this legal framework, Md Idris Miah will helm the policy-making body of the port city’s primary water supply and sanitation utility for the next three years.

The appointment brings a seasoned political figure into the administrative oversight of one of the country’s most critical urban infrastructure bodies. As convenor of the Chattogram South District BNP, Md Idris Miah has spent years navigating regional party politics. His transition into leading the corporate governance board of Chattogram WASA marks a major administrative shift at a time when the port city faces growing civic challenges.

In an immediate response following the announcement, Md Idris Miah expressed his gratitude to the head of government for placing trust in his leadership. He pledged to discharge his administrative duties with the utmost dedication, focusing on enhancing public service delivery and upgrading urban infrastructure.

Chattogram WASA remains tasked with supplying safe drinking water and managing sewerage systems for millions of residents in the country’s commercial capital. The authority faces ongoing pressure to address water salinity issues, modernise distribution networks, and tackle chronic urban drainage problems. The incoming chairman’s primary mandate will involve streamlining pending public works projects, ensuring institutional transparency, and expanding clean water coverage across both residential and industrial sectors in the metropolitan region.
