Barcelona are planning to bring Lionel Messi back to the newly renovated Camp Nou for a special tribute once work on the stadium is fully completed.
The club’s board is exploring the possibility of staging a dedicated match or commemorative event for the Argentine forward, who left Barcelona in 2021 after spending the majority of his professional career with the Catalan side. Barcelona president Joan Laporta has confirmed that the club wants to honour one of the most influential players in its history in front of a packed home crowd.
Speaking at the club’s general assembly on Saturday, Laporta said Barcelona had already formally communicated the idea to Messi. The proposed tribute would allow supporters to welcome the former No. 10 back to Camp Nou and give him the farewell that was not possible in the circumstances surrounding his departure.
According to comments reported by Spanish sports outlet Sport, Barcelona hopes to hold the event once the stadium renovation is complete. The refurbished Spotify Camp Nou is expected to have a capacity of around 105,000 spectators when fully operational, providing the setting for what could be a major occasion for the club and its supporters.
Messi’s association with Barcelona stretches back to his teenage years. He joined the club’s famed La Masia academy before progressing through the ranks and establishing himself in the first team. Over the following years, he became the central figure of one of the most successful periods in Barcelona’s history, collecting major domestic and European honours while setting numerous individual records.
His departure in 2021 came after Barcelona were unable to register a new contract with the player amid the club’s financial and contractual difficulties. Messi subsequently moved to Paris Saint-Germain before continuing his career in Major League Soccer with Inter Miami.
His exit from Barcelona was particularly emotional because of the length and significance of his relationship with the club. Although he had already left European football by the time of the reported plans for his return, his connection with Barcelona has remained a major part of the club’s modern identity.
The proposed Camp Nou tribute would therefore carry significance beyond a simple appearance. It would give Barcelona an opportunity to recognise Messi’s contribution in front of the supporters who watched his rise from an academy prospect to a global football icon.
However, the event is not yet guaranteed. Laporta’s comments make clear that the final decision rests with Messi. Barcelona may have formally presented the proposal, but the player must agree before any tribute can take place.
For now, the club’s intention is clear: once the renovated Camp Nou is ready, Barcelona want Messi back on its pitch, this time to receive the full recognition of the supporters who witnessed one of the greatest chapters in the club’s history.
