Tragedy and public outrage have gripped the quiet union of Gabura in Shyamnagar, Satkhira, following the burial of Morium Khatun, the second wife of Gazi Nazrul Islam, the Member of Parliament for the Satkhira-4 constituency. Late on Monday night, hundreds of solemn villagers gathered along the banks of the Kopotaksho River as a engine-driven trawler transported the young woman’s body back to her ancestral home. She was laid to rest at approximately 12:40 am in her family graveyard at Sardarpara, following a Janaza prayer adjacent to the Gabura West Para Sardar Bari Jame Mosque.
The grief-stricken ceremony took place under the supervision of local officials and law enforcement, including Shyamnagar Police Sub-Inspectors Aniruddha Roy and Badiuzzaman, along with Gabura Union Parishad Member Golam Mostafa. Grief was palpable across the village, where Morium had spent little of her life due to growing up in Dhaka. Local residents expressed profound shock at the abrupt loss of such a young life, demanding a thorough and impartial police investigation to uncover the true circumstances surrounding her death.
Morium’s body was recovered by police on Sunday, found hanging inside a flat at the NAM Bhaban—a government residential complex for parliamentarians in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka. Following the recovery, her father, Masum Billah, filed a formal case alleging abetment to suicide. The lawsuit names three primary accused: MP Gazi Nazrul Islam, his first wife Maksuda Begum, and Morium’s maternal uncle, Obaidur Rahman. Acting swiftly on the allegations, police arrested both the lawmaker and his first wife. A Dhaka court subsequently granted law enforcement a four-day remand to interrogate Gazi Nazrul Islam, whilst placing Maksuda Begum on a one-day remand for questioning.
By Tuesday morning, crowds of sympathetic neighbours continued to gather at Morium’s family home in Gabura to offer condolences. Her parents, entirely overwhelmed by grief, declined to speak with journalists. Representatives from the local community have voiced strong concerns, pressing authorities to ensure that political influence does not impede the pursuit of justice. The case remains under active investigation by law enforcement officials in Dhaka.
