Police have recovered the floating body of a 51-year-old marketing consultant, Md Jabeed Ahmed, from Dhanmondi Lake in the capital, sparking intrigue and concern among morning visitors. The discovery was made at approximately 7:30 am on Tuesday, beneath a bridge situated behind the Abesh Hotel along Road No. 10 in Dhanmondi. His body was transferred to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy following initial police inquiries at the scene.
Local residents and morning walkers first spotted the body drifting in the water and immediately alerted Dhanmondi Police Station. Upon arriving, officers retrieved the deceased and conducted a preliminary search, recovering a National Identity (NID) card from his person. Armed with this critical piece of identification, law enforcement quickly tracked down his family and notified them of the tragic discovery. His wife, Shahana Jabin Khan, subsequently arrived at the site to formally confirm his identity.
According to details provided by Shahana, the family resided in the Bhatara area of Dhaka. She revealed to investigating officers that her husband, the son of Salauddin Ahmed, had been out of work for an extended period. The prolonged unemployment had subjected him to severe financial distress and considerable mental strain in the months leading up to his death. However, his family could not offer any immediate explanation as to how he ended up in the lake or the precise circumstances that led to his demise.
Sub-Inspector Abdul Gafur of Dhanmondi Police Station confirmed that all required legal procedures have been completed, with the body dispatched for forensic examination. Law enforcement officials emphasised that the autopsy report will be instrumental in determining the exact cause of death—whether it resulted from accidental drowning, suicide, or potential foul play.
As part of the ongoing investigation, police are examining the surrounding area and gathering details regarding Jabeed’s movements prior to the incident, including how he travelled from Bhatara to Dhanmondi. The retrieval of a body from one of the capital’s most prominent public recreational spots created significant commotion early in the day, drawing crowds of onlookers before police cleared the scene. Authorities have refrained from drawing early conclusions, noting that further clarity will depend entirely on the medical examiner’s findings and gathering further intelligence.
