Essex County Cricket Club batter Robin Das has been charged with rape following an investigation by the Metropolitan Police, triggering his immediate suspension from all cricketing duties. The 24-year-old, who resides on Queens Road in Waltham Forest, is scheduled to appear at Inner London Crown Court on 9 October to face the allegations.
According to official statements from Scotland Yard, the charges relate to an alleged incident involving a woman in Brixton on 30 March 2024. Das was initially arrested in connection with the inquiry on 27 August last year before being formally charged on 23 July. The timing of the charge coincided with his sole appearance for Essex this season in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup against Middlesex, coming just two days after the fixture. Upon learning of the legal proceedings, club officials moved swiftly to suspend the player pending the outcome of the judicial process.
A spokesperson for Essex County Cricket Club confirmed that a player had appeared in court regarding a private matter, adding that the club would make no further statement while criminal proceedings remain active.
Born in Leytonstone, Greater London, Das holds British-Bangladeshi heritage. His father, Mridul Das, originally migrated to the United Kingdom from the Sunamganj district of Bangladesh. The young batsman made his professional debut for Essex in 2020, eventually featuring in nine first-class matches for the Chelmsford-based county. A prominent highlight of his domestic career came in 2023 when he struck a notable century against a touring Ireland side. That same year, he contributed to Essex reaching the final of the Vitality Blast, where they ultimately finished as runners-up to Somerset at Edgbaston.
Beyond the English domestic circuit, Das gained international visibility within South Asian cricket circles. In 2023, he earned a franchise selection in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) after being drafted by Dhaka Dominators, drawing attention for his roots in the region alongside his development through the English county pathway.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that investigations into the matter remain ongoing, with court proceedings set to commence next month.
