Tragedy struck Masterpara in the Pirgacha upazila of Rangpur late on Friday evening, after a heated domestic argument culminated in the death of a 55-year-old father, allegedly at the hands of his own son.
The victim, identified as Mahabur Rahman, was critically injured during a confrontation at his residence in the Char Tambulpur union. According to local residents and police sources, the dispute escalated rapidly around 9:00 pm, leaving the family in shock and the surrounding community in mourning.
The fatal incident stems from ongoing domestic tensions surrounding the suspect, 22-year-old Hasanur Rahman. Hasanur had married approximately three months ago, wedding a woman from Laksam village in the neighbouring Sundarganj upazila of Gaibandha. However, ongoing friction over Hasanur’s unemployment led his newly-wed wife to return to her paternal home in frustration.
The strain between the families deepened when Hasanur stopped taking meals at home out of resentment. On Friday morning, his mother-in-law arrived at the house alongside several relatives in an effort to address the situation. Hasanur refused to host or offer hospitality to the visiting in-laws, triggering an intense household argument that lingered throughout the day.
Events took a turn when Mahabur intervened, urging his son to join the visiting mother-in-law for a meal. When Hasanur adamantly refused, Mahabur struck his son across the face in an attempt to discipline him. Incensed by the reprimand, Hasanur reportedly retrieved a sharp knife from inside the house and stabbed his father directly in the chest.
Neighbours rushed to the scene upon hearing the commotion and managed to transport the bleeding victim to Rangpur Medical College Hospital. Medical personnel pronounced Mahabur dead shortly after arrival due to severe trauma and internal bleeding.
Selim Malik, Officer-in-Charge of Pirgacha Police Station, confirmed that law enforcement agencies have launched a man-hunt to apprehend the suspect, who fled the scene immediately following the assault. The body has been sent for an autopsy, and formal legal proceedings are currently underway.
