A four-year-old boy lost his life after being struck by a battery-operated auto-rickshaw in Brahmanpara Upazila, Cumilla, highlighting ongoing safety concerns over unregulated rural transport.
The incident occurred on Friday afternoon in Mahalaxmipara village, situated within the Upazila’s Sadar Union. The victim, identified as Omar Farooq, was the youngest son of Saiful Islam, a local day labourer residing in the South Molla Bari area of the village.
According to local residents, young Omar rushed out unexpectedly from his family courtyard onto the adjacent road. Before onlookers could intervene, an oncoming battery-powered three-wheeler ran over him, leaving him critically injured on the tarmac. Neighbours rushed to the scene immediately, rescuing the child and transporting him to the Brahmanpara Upazila Health Complex for urgent medical intervention.
However, medical personnel were unable to save him. Dr Sabiha Tabassum Proma, a duty physician at the hospital’s emergency department, confirmed that the child was brought in dead. She stated that the boy had sustained severe head trauma, and the primary cause of death was excessive bleeding resulting from the impact.
Officer-in-Charge of Brahmanpara Police Station, Md Farooq Hossain, acknowledged the incident and confirmed that law enforcement agencies had been informed of the fatal tragedy. Police officials clarified that appropriate legal steps, including an investigation into the driver and vehicle involved, will be formally initiated once an official complaint is lodged by the deceased’s family.
This fatal collision brings renewed attention to the rising hazards posed by battery-driven auto-rickshaws across rural roads in Bangladesh. Commonly known as “Easy Bikes,” these light vehicles frequently operate without formal regulatory oversight, legal licensing, or safety checks. Their rapid proliferation, coupled with inexperienced drivers and narrow, unmonitored village roads lacking pedestrian infrastructure, has resulted in a marked surge in localized traffic casualties—with young children frequently bearing the brunt of these avoidable accidents.
