The detainees were released later on Saturday morning after signing undertaking bonds and being placed into the custody of senior leaders from their respective political organisations.

Those held during the incident were identified as Sirajul Islam, 45, secretary of Ward No. 4 Jamaat-e-Islami under Chithlia Union; Jamaat supporters Maruf, 21, Bashar, 35, Mofizul Pramanik, 40, Jahangir Hossain, 40, and Badal Pramanik, 50; alongside BNP activist Meherul Islam, 45, and BNP supporter Shahidul Islam, 53.

According to Mirpur police sources, law enforcement personnel conducted a targeted raid in the Chithlia area at around 12:30 am on Saturday. During the drive, officers arrested Hafizur Rahman Hafiz, president of the Chithlia Union unit of the banned Krishak League, who was wanted in connection with an ongoing sabotage case. Hafizur was subsequently taken to Mirpur Police Station for processing.

Word of Hafizur’s arrest spread rapidly across the locality, prompting Sirajul Islam to assemble a delegation. At approximately 2:00 am, the group arrived at the station, insisting that officers drop the charges and release Hafizur immediately. The delegation began pressuring station staff, repeatedly demanding his discharge despite explicit warnings from duty officers.

Officer-in-Charge of Mirpur Police Station, Md Shahidul Islam, explained that the group refused to desist from lobbying for the release of a suspect facing serious sabotage charges. As their persistent demands disrupted police operations, officers took the eight individuals into custody to maintain order within the premises.

Following consultations with senior police management, authorities decided to release the eight men after collecting signed undertakings regarding their future conduct. They were formally handed over to local political leaders from Jamaat-e-Islami and the BNP, whilst Hafizur Rahman Hafiz remains in custody pending court proceedings.
