The cassette and CD era may have faded into the past, but the idea of a complete music album still retains a place in Bangladesh’s music culture. In the digital age, artists increasingly release songs one at a time through YouTube and various audio platforms, allowing listeners to access new music almost immediately.
Despite that shift, several Bangladeshi musicians are once again embracing the solo-album format. For some, the move is rooted in nostalgia for a period when an album represented a substantial body of work rather than a collection of individually released tracks. Alongside the renewed interest in albums, a number of solo concerts are also being staged, bringing artists and audiences together in live settings.
Ferdous Ara returns to modern songs
Nazrul Sangeet exponent Ferdous Ara is preparing a new album of modern Bengali songs after more than three decades. Provisionally titled Prem, the album will feature 10 tracks, with work on several of the songs already completed.
The project is planned as both an audio and visual release. Music videos for each track are expected to be produced and released separately, while the songs will also be made available in audio format.
For Ferdous Ara, whose career has been closely associated with Nazrul Sangeet, the project marks a return to modern songs after a lengthy break.
Kazi Shuvo returns after a decade
Singer Kazi Shuvo is preparing his first new solo album in 10 years. His previous two solo albums, Mayar Agun and Daga, were released in 2016.
The new album, Keu Bujhlo Na, is scheduled for release on 28 September under the banner of Dhruba Music Station. It contains nine songs, including a duet performed by Kazi Shuvo and Badhan Sarker Puja.
Composer and singer Tarun Munshi is also returning to the solo-album format after a decade. His album, Naseeb, will contain seven songs covering a range of subjects, including love, separation and nature. The project also explores themes related to human life, mysticism and social concerns.
Recording of all the songs has recently been completed, and the album will also be released by Dhruba Music Station.
Lutfur Hasan prepares his eighth solo album
Singer Lutfur Hasan, known for the song Ghuri Tumi Kar Akashe Oro, is also working on a new solo album. His previous solo album was released about a decade ago.
The title of the forthcoming project has yet to be finalised. It will feature eight songs, all written and composed by Hasan himself. The album will be his eighth solo release.
Having handled both the lyrics and compositions for every track, Hasan is taking a particularly personal approach to the project. The release will add another chapter to his solo work after a considerable gap.
Shaan Sayek working on five new songs
Composer and singer Shaan Sayek is preparing a new five-song solo album. The title has not yet been finalised, but production is already under way.
The songs have been written by Lutfur Hasan, Mahmud Murad, Walid Hasan and Shanto Pathik. The project is another example of artists continuing to work with the album format even as individual-track releases have become common in the digital era.
Joy Shahriar’s Boka
Singer Joy Shahriar has returned with Boka, his fifth studio album. The eight-track project comes six years after his previous solo album.
The first song, Tomake Bhulte Shomoy Lagbe, was released last year. Three tracks from the album have been released so far, while the remaining songs are expected to be issued gradually.
Rather than releasing all the tracks at once, the songs are being made available in stages. This allows individual tracks to reach listeners separately while remaining part of a larger album project.
Rafa set for first solo concert
The renewed activity extends beyond recorded music. Several established performers are also taking their work to the stage through solo concerts.
Raief Al Hasan, widely known as Rafa, is preparing for his first solo concert. He has spent more than two decades working with music, guitar and drums and has performed with several bands. He is particularly known for his association with Aurthohin and Cryptic Fate.
A few years ago, he formed his own band, AvoidRafa. The band’s first solo concert, Eto Boka Keno Tumi, will be held on 2 October at Hotel InterContinental in Dhaka.
The event will combine musical performances with personal recollections. Rafa is expected to share experiences from different stages of his musical career between performances. Aurthohin will appear as the guest band.
Bappa Majumder returns with Moonlit Melodies
Although Bappa Majumder regularly performs at concerts with bands, he has held relatively few solo musical evenings. His first solo concert took place in 2022.
In 2024, he marked three decades in music with a solo concert titled Bappa Majumder Odyssey at the Krishibid Institution auditorium. His most recent solo concert was held last year at the Yamaha Music Lounge in Tejgaon.
After a one-year break, Bappa is scheduled to perform again on 9 October at the Krishibid Institution auditorium. Titled Moonlit Melodies, the concert will feature some of his popular songs.
Other solo performances have also taken place in Dhaka in recent days. Miftah performed at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on 25 September, while Nirjhar Chowdhury held a solo concert at Alliance Française in Dhanmondi on 26 September.
The latest projects show how Bangladesh’s music scene is accommodating two different approaches at the same time. Digital platforms have made individual-song releases a natural part of contemporary listening, while full-length albums continue to offer artists a way to bring several pieces of music together as a single project.
Live concerts provide another dimension. They allow performers to present familiar songs directly to audiences and, in some cases, share personal experiences from their musical journeys. With several artists now preparing albums after lengthy breaks and others returning to the stage, the country’s music calendar is taking on a renewed sense of activity.
