A afternoon trip to the river turned into tragedy in Chapainawabganj when two young men drowned whilst bathing in the Mahananda River. The incident took place at around midday on Sunday (27 September) in the Diyar Dhainagar area under Gobratala Union in Chapainawabganj Sadar Upazila.
The deceased have been identified as 18-year-old Sujon, son of Abdur Rahim, and 19-year-old Sabbir Ahmed, son of Subahan. Both victims were residents of Mahipur Bhatopara village in the same upazila.
According to family members, eyewitnesses, and local residents, a group of four friends had gone to the river together to bathe during the afternoon. Whilst swimming, Sujon and Sabbir suddenly encountered deep water and strong currents, causing them to lose their footing and sink beneath the surface. The remaining two companions managed to swim to safety and reach the riverbank.
Raising an alarm, the surviving youths alerted nearby villagers, who immediately launched a search and rescue effort in the river. After searching the water for some time, local residents recovered the submerged bodies of Sujon and Sabbir. Neither survived the ordeal.
Word of the double drowning spread rapidly through Mahipur Bhatopara village, drawing grief-stricken relatives and neighbours to the scene. Local police officers arrived shortly after receiving notification of the fatalities to inspect the location and coordinate formal proceedings.
Ekramul Hossain, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chapainawabganj Sadar Model Police Station, confirmed the details of the tragedy. He explained that because the incident occurred within a river waterway, jurisdiction over the legal formalities falls under the river police. The local police station has formally notified the relevant naval police station, whose officers will carry out the necessary legal reviews and documentation regarding the unnatural deaths.
The bodies of both teenagers were taken back to their respective family homes in Mahipur Bhatopara village, where relatives prepared for funeral arrangements.
Accidental drownings remain a frequent concern across rural riverine communities in Bangladesh, particularly during and after the monsoon season when water levels fluctuate and riverbeds shift unexpectedly. Local elders routinely urge young people to exercise extreme caution near fast-flowing rivers, noting that underwater currents and sudden drop-offs pose severe risks even to competent swimmers.
