A fatal road accident on the outskirts of Gazipur Metropolis has taken the lives of a 30-year-old mother and her young daughter. The incident occurred late on Sunday night along the busy Dhaka Bypass Road, near the Meghdubi Kali Factory area under the jurisdiction of Pubail Police Station.

The victims have been identified as Rejuka Begum, 30, and her three-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Riya Moni. Rejuka was the daughter of Sekandar Ali from Baghata village in Sherpur district’s Sreebardi upazila and the wife of Monir Hossain. She had been residing in a rented property belonging to Mostafa Kamal in the Salna Bazar area under Gazipur Metropolis’s Sadar Police Station.

According to police reports, the tragedy unfolded as Rejuka was returning home after visiting a friend’s residence in the Mirer Bazar area of Pubail. Whilst attempting to cross or navigate the poorly lit Dhaka Bypass Road during the late hours of the night, both mother and child were struck by an unidentified speeding vehicle.

Following the collision, passersby contacted the national emergency service line, 999. Upon receiving the prompt alert, Sub-Inspector Mohammad Anwar Hossain of Pubail Police Station led an emergency response team to the location. Officers quickly recovered the critically injured victims from the roadside and rushed them to the Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur for urgent medical intervention.

Attending physicians at the hospital pronounced Rejuka Begum dead upon arrival due to the severity of her injuries. Her young daughter, Riya Moni, was admitted in critical condition as medical staff fought to stabilize her. However, the child succumbed to her extensive injuries at around 3:00 am while undergoing emergency treatment.

Atikur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of Pubail Police Station, confirmed the details of the accident and stated that formal procedures are under way. Police have launched an investigation to track down the hit-and-run vehicle and identify its driver. The Dhaka Bypass Road, heavily traversed by long-distance freight vehicles and heavy lorries throughout the night, frequently witnesses severe traffic collisions due to reckless driving and low visibility during late-night hours. Investigators are reviewing local CCTV footage from surrounding establishments in an effort to trace the vehicle involved in the deadly crash.
