Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has sent birthday wishes to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, posting a brief message on social media on Monday (28 September).
In a post on his verified Facebook page, Shakib wrote: “Happy birthday, Apa. Wishing you good health and well-being.”
The message was posted as Sheikh Hasina remains a prominent figure in Bangladesh’s continuing political discussions. On 5 August 2024, she resigned as prime minister and left Bangladesh amid a mass movement led by students and joined by people from wider sections of society. Her departure brought an end to nearly 15 years in power. She subsequently remained in India.
Shakib’s own public profile has also extended beyond cricket in recent years. He entered electoral politics ahead of the 12th parliamentary election, contesting the Magura-1 constituency as an Awami League candidate. He won the seat and became a member of parliament.
Following the political change in 2024, questions were raised in various quarters about Shakib’s political role and his position during the anti-discrimination student movement. A murder case was subsequently filed against the cricketer.
The period also had consequences for the final stage of Shakib’s Test career. In 2024, he had planned to play his final Test against South Africa in Mirpur in October. He had prepared to travel back to Bangladesh from the United States to take part in the match.
That return, however, did not take place because of the prevailing security situation and related circumstances. As a result, Shakib was unable to make the planned farewell appearance in Mirpur. He has since remained in the United States with his family.
Shakib has been one of Bangladesh’s most prominent cricketers for many years, while his brief involvement in electoral politics added a new dimension to his public profile. His comments and social media activity have consequently attracted attention beyond the sporting arena, particularly during periods of political change.
His latest Facebook post contained no political commentary. It consisted solely of a birthday greeting and wishes for Sheikh Hasina’s health and well-being. Given both the current political context and Shakib’s previous involvement in politics, however, the short message has attracted attention on social media.
