Two young men have been taken into custody following an intelligence-led operation in the Govindapur area of Comilla, where law enforcement officers recovered an illegal foreign-made pistol and a magazine.
The raid was conducted on Sunday afternoon by a team from the Special Response Battalion (SRB)-11, CPC-2, targeting suspected criminal activities in the Kotwali Model Police Station precinct. The operation forms part of an intensified campaign by law enforcement agencies across the district to curb the illegal possession of firearms and disrupt organized criminal networks operating in the region.
Officers identified the detainees as 20-year-old Md Samir Islam and 30-year-old Md Monjurul Islam. According to an official press release issued by the SRB-11, preliminary interrogations revealed that both suspects have long been linked to a series of violent crimes in and around Comilla town. Intelligence reports suggest that the duo actively used unlicensed weaponry to intimidate local residents, execute opportunistic muggings, and run extortion rackets targeting small business owners and commuters.
The proliferation of small arms in border-adjacent districts like Comilla has remained a persistent challenge for regional law enforcement agencies. Due to the area’s geographic proximity to international border routes, transit corridors are frequently exploited by smuggling syndicates attempting to filter illegal arms, ammunition, and contraband into urban centres. Police authorities have consequently heightened vigilance, deploying specialized tactical units to intercept illegal weapons before they can be utilized in destabilizing public safety.
Following their arrest, the suspects were transferred to the Kotwali Model Police Station. Senior officers confirmed that formal charges under the relevant sections of the Arms Act are currently being processed against both individuals. Further investigations are underway to ascertain the original source of the seized foreign firearm, trace potential accomplices, and determine whether the weapon was previously deployed in other unsolved criminal offenses across the district.
