A routine inspection of municipal infrastructure in the Indian capital descended into physical confrontation after a Delhi minister struck a young man who was filming the event, prompting the aide to attempt a retaliatory strike.
The dispute occurred in Tilak Nagar, West Delhi, during a public road inspection conducted by Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Verma. Accompanying the inspection was Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Jarnail Singh, who represents the Tilak Nagar constituency. Tensions escalated rapidly when Singh challenged the structural integrity and construction standards of the newly laid tarmac.
Video footage circulating on social media captures Singh effortlessly pulling up large segments of fresh asphalt using his bare hands to demonstrate what he described as substandard municipal work. The demonstration triggered a heated verbal altercation between the minister and the local lawmaker regarding administrative oversight and quality control.
As Minister Verma attempted to depart the scene, Sahib Singh, a personal assistant to the AAP MLA, continued recording the exchange on a mobile phone. Attempting to halt the recording, Verma abruptly knocked the device aside and delivered a physical slap to the young aide. Undeterred, the young man immediately lunged forward to strike the minister back, leading to a brief tussle before security personnel intervened to separate the pair.
Speaking to the news agency ANI, Sahib Singh clarified that he was conducting a live video broadcast for Jarnail Singh’s official social media page when the encounter took place. He stated that the minister forcefully seized the handset to interrupt the livestream before assaulting him, maintaining that he had offered no provocation. Official police complaints have since been lodged regarding the assault.
In defence of his actions, Minister Verma claimed that an associate of the AAP MLA had hurled abusive remarks directed at his family members, asserting that his physical reaction was a direct response to verbal provocation.
The incident has triggered sharp political backlash across the capital. Following the confrontation, Jarnail Singh published the recorded footage online, accusing the minister of abusing his official authority. Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal condemned the act and demanded the minister’s immediate arrest, highlighting ongoing governance friction between political parties in the city administration.
