India have advanced to the semi-finals of the Asian Games men’s cricket tournament after their quarter-final clash against Afghanistan was completely washed out in Nishshin without a single ball being bowled. Unrelenting rain and a severely waterlogged outfield prevented even the toss from taking place, forcing match officials to abandon the fixture sixteen minutes ahead of its scheduled start time.
Under tournament regulations, ties or abandoned fixtures in the knockout stages are decided by international seedings based on the official ICC T20 World Rankings. As the higher-seeded side in the match-up, India were awarded safe passage to the last four, whilst a frustrated Afghan contingent was eliminated from the competition without getting an opportunity to compete on the field.
The monsoon conditions have severely disrupted the quarter-final stage of the competition. Earlier on Monday, the opening quarter-final between Pakistan and Hong Kong suffered an identical fate, with persistent downpours preventing any play and forcing an early abandonment. Pakistan, enjoying a superior seeding over Hong Kong, subsequently progressed to the semi-finals.
The regulations heavily favour the continent’s premier cricketing nations—India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka—who were all granted direct entry into the quarter-final stage as the top four seeded teams. Consequently, if the upcoming quarter-final between Sri Lanka and Nepal succumbs to wet weather on Tuesday, Sri Lanka will automatically advance on account of their higher ranking.
For Afghanistan, this premature exit marks a bitter case of history repeating itself at the hands of inclement weather and tournament seeding rules. During the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, Afghanistan secured the silver medal after their final against India was abandoned due to rain 18.2 overs into the first innings. On that occasion, India were awarded the gold medal by virtue of holding the higher ranking, leaving Afghanistan to settle for silver.
India will now turn their attention to Thursday’s second semi-final, where they are scheduled to face the winner of Tuesday’s encounter between Sri Lanka and Nepal.
