Police have arrested eight people, including three leaders affiliated with the Awami League and Chhatra League, during separate operations in Jibannagar upazila of Chuadanga.
The arrests were made between 1am and 5am on Monday (28 September), as separate police teams conducted raids at several locations across the upazila. The operation was carried out following information received by the police about the individuals, according to Jibannagar police.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Awami League leader Obaidul Islam, 54, son of the late Ismail Mondal of Chhutia village; Awami League leader Sazzad Biswas, 56, son of Ohab Ali of Balihuda village; and Chhatra League leader Sajeduzzaman Dip, 24, son of Asaduzzaman of Mohanagar Uttarpara in Jibannagar town.
The other five arrested are Sabbir Hossain, 23, son of Faruk Hossain of Monohorpur village; Nur Hossain, 42, son of Hamid Bepari of Korchadanga village; his brother Amin Hossain, 55; Rokon Mia, 45; and Mojibar, 42.
Jibannagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sulaiman Sheikh said separate police teams carried out the raids at different locations in the upazila based on confidential information. The operation continued for several hours during the early hours of Monday.
According to the police, Obaidul Islam, Sazzad Biswas and Sajeduzzaman Dip have cases filed against them at the police station under the Explosives Act. The police did not provide further details about the allegations or the circumstances surrounding those cases.
The arrests come as police operations continue in different areas of the upazila in connection with existing cases. However, the police did not disclose whether separate cases had been filed against the other five people arrested during the latest operation.
Following their arrest, all eight individuals were taken into police custody for legal proceedings. Police said they were subsequently sent to the Chuadanga court at around 11.30am on Tuesday.
The court will determine the next stage of proceedings in accordance with the relevant cases. Police officials did not provide any further information about the court’s decision at the time of reporting.
The latest arrests highlight the continuation of police operations in Jibannagar, where law enforcement agencies are carrying out raids at different locations based on case-related information and intelligence inputs.
