India Edge Past Pakistan by 19 Runs for Asian Gold

India’s men’s cricket team secured the gold medal at the Asian Games with a hard-fought 19-run victory over arch-rivals Pakistan in a tense final in Nisshin, Japan. The triumph completes a historic double for Indian cricket at the Games, following the women’s team’s earlier success in capturing gold in their respective tournament.

Choosing to bat first after winning the toss, Indian skipper Shreyas Iyer watched opener Abhishek Sharma set a blistering tone. Sharma hammered 61 runs off just 28 deliveries, a fiery display featuring three boundaries and seven towering sixes. Despite early dismissals—Vaibhav Suryavanshi departing for 15 with two sixes and Sanju Samson falling for just 2—Sharma kept the scoreboard ticking over at speed.

A mid-innings lull briefly slowed India’s progress. Following Ishan Kishan’s departure, the Indian side went five consecutive overs without finding the boundary ropes. Middle-order batters Shreyas Iyer (21 off 24 balls) and Ishan Kishan (20 off 18 balls) were forced to dig in and rebuild the momentum under sustained pressure from the Pakistani attack.

The late overs, however, provided the decisive flourish. Tilak Varma and Shivam Dube launched a relentless assault in the closing stages to elevate India to a formidable total of 211 for 6 in their allotted 20 overs. Dube chipped in with a brisk 27 off 15 balls before falling, while Varma remained unbeaten on 51 off 22 deliveries, smashing four sixes and three boundaries to propel the side past the 200-run mark.

Pakistan’s run chase suffered an early setback as the top order struggled to find rhythm against India’s disciplined bowling, slumping to 39 for 3 inside seven overs. A spirited 87-run fourth-wicket partnership between Saim Ayub and Hasan Nawaz injected fresh hope into the chase. Ayub contributed 29 off 22 balls, but it was Nawaz who threatened to single-handedly snatch the match away.

The 24-year-old right-handed batter produced an astonishing display of power-hitting, scoring a brilliant 96 off 51 balls, laced with five boundaries and seven sixes. Nawaz fought valiantly until he was dismissed off the final ball of the match. Ultimately, a lack of substantial support from the lower order left Pakistan short on 192 for 6, handing India the gold and leaving Pakistan to claim the silver medal—still their finest achievement in Asian Games men’s cricket history.

Tensions were palpable throughout the high-stakes encounter, highlighted by the captains maintaining a strict distance and refraining from the customary handshake at the toss.
