A 60-year-old farmer named Mokbul Hossain was beaten to death during a violent altercation over the possession of state-owned land in Gouripur, Mymensingh. His younger brother, 50-year-old Dulal Hossain, sustained severe injuries in the attack and remains under medical care. Police have detained four women for questioning in connection with the incident.
The deadly clash occurred on Saturday (3 October) morning in Char Bhabkhali village, situated within the Bhangnamari Union of Gouripur sub-district. Mokbul Hossain was the son of the late Kasam Uddin, a long-time resident of the village.
Local sources and police reported that Mokbul and his brother Dulal went to cultivate a 16-katha agricultural plot that they claimed as their ancestral property, though official records classify it as state-owned khas land. As the brothers began sowing black gram seeds on Saturday morning, four sons of their neighbour Amanat Mia—identified as Babul Mia, Jahangir Mia, Abdur Rashid, and Anarul Islam—intervened to stop the cultivation.
An argument quickly escalated into a heated confrontation. During the altercation, Babul Mia struck Mokbul on the head with a heavy wooden stick, causing him to collapse immediately onto the field.
Dulal Hossain alleged that the remaining brothers joined in, repeatedly striking the unconscious farmer. When Dulal rushed to protect his older brother, the assailants turned on him and beat him severely.
Mokbul’s daughter, Najma, recounted the horrific moment, stating that she ran towards the field upon hearing the commotion but arrived too late to save her father from the brutal assault.
Distraught family members and neighbours rescued the injured brothers and rushed Mokbul to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. Attending physicians at the emergency department pronounced him dead on arrival.
Officers from Gouripur Police Station inspected the crime scene and visited the hospital following the incident. Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Habibur Rahman confirmed that law enforcement has taken four women into custody for interrogation regarding the attack. Primary suspects remain at large, while police operations are underway to apprehend those directly involved. A murder case is currently being prepared for filing at Gouripur Police Station.
