India Post 351 in Chandigarh as West Indies Face Record Chase

India posted a total of 351 for 7 against the West Indies at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh, setting a ground record in the venue’s inaugural men’s One Day International.
The stadium had previously hosted the Indian men’s team for a Test match against South Africa and a Twenty20 International against Afghanistan. On the women’s circuit, four ODIs were played at the venue, featuring a high of 282 runs scored by Australia, a match where India narrowly missed out despite posting 281. India’s total of 351 now stands as the highest ODI score recorded at the venue.
Opting to bat after winning the toss, India built their inning around an unbeaten 129 from wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul. The performance took India’s tally of 350-plus totals in ODI cricket to 45 innings. India’s historical affinity for high scores against the West Indies dates back to 8 December 2011 in Indore, when they amassed a record 418 for 5. Since then, India have crossed the 400-run mark eight additional times, including a score of 406 in the second ODI of the current series.
Having secured convincing victories in the first two matches of the three-game series, India hold an unassailable 2-0 lead. The West Indies now face the prospect of a 3-0 series whitewash unless they pull off a record-breaking run chase.
The visitors were unable to chase down India’s 405-run target in the previous match in Guwahati, and history presents a formidable hurdle. The West Indies have never successfully chased a target of 350 or more in ODIs. Their highest successful chase came in 2019 when they surpassed Ireland’s total of 327. Their highest overall ODI score prior to this tour came against England, when they made 389 in pursuit of a 419-run target. To avoid a series sweep in Chandigarh, the two-time world champions must surpass their historic limits.
