Several parts of Bangladesh may experience light to moderate rain or thundershowers over the next four days, with temporary gusty winds possible in some areas. The rainfall could also bring a slight fall in daytime temperatures in parts of the country.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department issued the forecast in its 120-hour weather outlook, effective from 6pm on Saturday (3 October).
According to the department, the extended axis of the monsoon trough currently stretches from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar through West Bengal and the southern parts of Bangladesh towards Assam. The monsoon remains relatively weak over Bangladesh, while its condition over the North Bay of Bengal is described as weak to moderate.
This weather pattern may lead to scattered rainfall rather than widespread precipitation across the country during the coming days.
Until 6pm on Sunday, isolated areas of Rangpur, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions may receive light to moderate rain or thundershowers, accompanied by temporary gusty winds in some locations. Elsewhere, the weather is expected to remain mainly dry. Both daytime and night-time temperatures may fall slightly across the country.
On Monday, rain or thundershowers may occur at one or two places in Dhaka, Mymensingh, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions. The weather in other parts of the country is likely to remain mainly dry, while temperatures may remain largely unchanged.
The likelihood of isolated rainfall will continue on Tuesday. One or two places in Rangpur, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions may experience rain or thundershowers. Daytime temperatures could fall slightly under the influence of the weather conditions.
On Wednesday, the possibility of rain is expected to extend to more divisions. Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet may see rain or thundershowers at one or two places. Both daytime and night-time temperatures may decrease slightly.
The forecast indicates that rainfall during this period is likely to remain localised, with conditions varying considerably from one region to another. While some areas may receive brief showers accompanied by gusty winds, much of the country could remain dry.
The Meteorological Department has also pointed to a broader seasonal change ahead. In its extended five-day outlook, it said the south-west monsoon could withdraw from Bangladesh.
The possible withdrawal would mark a further transition in the country’s seasonal weather pattern. Until then, however, intermittent rain and thundershowers are expected to remain possible in several regions, particularly in areas identified in the short-term forecast.
