Shahinur Alam Marfat, the founding president of the Khilkhet Thana unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and a former local ward councillor candidate, has been arrested in the capital following accusations of systemic extortion.
The law enforcement operation was executed on Sunday by an elite operational team from the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-1), who subsequently handed Marfat over to Khilkhet Police Station for further legal processing. According to senior police officials, Marfat had been officially categorised as a listed suspect regarding ongoing extortion networks operating throughout Khilkhet and its neighbouring commercial zones in northern Dhaka.
Local residents and business proprietors reported that Marfat, who played a central role in establishing the BNP’s grass-roots organisational framework in the Khilkhet area, had faced persistent allegations of unlawful monetary demands over an extended period. Alongside his historic political tenure within the opposition party, Marfat previously ran as a candidate in local municipal elections for a ward councillor seat, though his campaign ultimately failed to secure a victory.
Officers at Khilkhet Police Station confirmed that primary investigative and administrative procedures are underway to register formal charges against the suspect following his custody transfer from RAB. Police authorities reaffirmed that once preliminary documentation is finalised, Marfat will be produced before a Dhaka magistrate court to face official judicial remand proceedings. Law enforcement agencies stressed that targeted operations against listed suspects involved in extortion, intimidation, and organised criminal enterprises remain actively underway across the capital to ensure public security.
The detention of a prominent local political organiser highlights ongoing efforts by security agencies to address entrenched extortion networks in suburban Dhaka. Local law enforcement officials reaffirmed their commitment to investigating all formal complaints impartially, regardless of an individual’s political affiliation or standing within the community.
