Extortion Attempt Under False Identity in Chapainawabganj: One Caught Red-Handed

Four youths have been accused of demanding extortion and snatching gold ornaments from the home of a retired army officer in Chapainawabganj, falsely identifying themselves as members of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. One of the individuals was caught red-handed by locals and handed over to the police after being beaten.

The incident occurred at approximately 11:30 PM on Thursday, 31st July, in the Swarupnagar area of the town.

According to local sources, Sohel Rana and three accomplices arrived at the residence of retired army officer Liakat Ali late at night. Claiming there was an underage marriage taking place in the house, they rang the doorbell and insisted on entering the premises. Once inside, they began to demand money, and when confronted, they assaulted women in the household and snatched two gold chains from their necks.

Responding to the cries for help, neighbours intervened. While three of the perpetrators managed to flee the scene, Sohel Rana was caught and subjected to a mob beating before being handed over to the police. Two women sustained injuries during the incident and were later given primary treatment at the district hospital.

Statement from the Victim

Liakat Ali, the retired army officer, stated:

“My daughter was supposed to meet the groom’s family on Friday, 1st August. But suddenly, on Thursday night, four youths arrived and made allegations of child marriage. They claimed to be locals and demanded money in exchange for not reporting the matter. This made me suspicious.”

Police Action

Md Motiur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of Chapainawabganj Sadar Police Station, confirmed:

“We received a written complaint stating that a group entered a house identifying themselves as members of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, and then attempted to extort money and committed snatching. We are currently investigating the matter, and legal proceedings are underway.”
