Third-Gender Individual Killed in Manikganj Highway Bus Collision

A third-gender individual lost her life on Sunday evening following a fatal collision between a passenger bus and a rickshaw on the Dhaka-Aricha highway in Manikganj Sadar upazila. The incident occurred around 7:30 pm on 4 October 2026 on top of the Jagir Bridge, highlighting ongoing concerns over road safety along one of the country’s busiest transport corridors.
The victim was identified as 35-year-old Borsha, whose ancestral home is located in the Kaliakair area of neighbouring Gazipur district.
According to police and eyewitness accounts, a Dhaka-bound passenger bus belonging to Selfie Paribahan was travelling at speed when it reached the Jagir Bridge. At the same time, a rickshaw carrying Borsha was heading towards Golra from the opposite direction. The bus collided head-on with the rickshaw on the narrow stretch of the bridge, causing severe damage to the three-wheeler and throwing the passenger onto the road. Borsha suffered fatal injuries from the impact and died at the scene before medical assistance could be summoned.
Following the collision, the driver of the involved Selfie Paribahan bus sped away from the spot to evade capture. The fatal crash triggered immediate outrage amongst local residents and passersby, who gathered at the scene and detained two other buses operated by the same transport company in protest. The situation caused brief disruption to traffic along the highway until law enforcement personnel arrived to restore order and secure the detained vehicles.
Highway police officers quickly intervened to clear the road and ensure the smooth flow of vehicular movement.
Officer-in-Charge of Golra Highway Police Station, Md Selim Matubbor, confirmed the fatality and stated that officers retrieved the body shortly after receiving news of the accident. Police investigators prepared an official inquest report at the site before dispatching the remains to the Manikganj Medical College Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination. Authorities have launched an investigation to trace the offending vehicle, identify the driver and helper responsible for the collision, and initiate legal proceedings under relevant road transport laws.
