Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have arrested 414 people during a 24-hour operation across the capital as part of efforts to curb crime and maintain public order. A total of 59 cases have been filed at different police stations in connection with the operation.
DMP Deputy Commissioner Md Akhtar Hossain confirmed the arrests on Monday morning, 5 October. He said the extensive operation was conducted in different parts of the capital to prevent criminal activities and maintain a stable law-and-order situation.
Mirpur recorded the highest number of arrests among the metropolitan divisions, with 81 people taken into custody. Police arrested 66 people in Wari, while 61 were detained in Tejgaon and 54 in Motijheel.
The operation also resulted in 48 arrests in Uttara, 35 in Lalbagh, 28 in Ramna and 25 in Gulshan. A further 16 people were arrested during separate operations conducted by the Detective Branch (DB) of police.
Police also recovered firearms and ammunition during the drive. The seized items included a foreign-made pistol, one magazine and five rounds of ammunition. A foreign-made revolver and four rounds of ammunition were also recovered.
A significant quantity of suspected narcotics was seized as part of the operation. Police recovered 21,672 yaba tablets, 2kg 735g of cannabis, 20g of heroin and another 30 packets of heroin.
The operation also targeted property linked to alleged criminal activities, including stolen and snatched mobile phones. Police recovered 324 mobile phones, nine tablets and six trunks. Cash amounting to Tk 9,570 was also seized.
In a separate development during the operation, police rescued one victim unharmed. No further details about the circumstances of the rescue or the identity of the individual were provided in the information released by the DMP.
The arrests and seizures came as police continued coordinated operations across several metropolitan divisions and through the DB. The distribution of arrests shows that the drive covered a wide area of the capital rather than being confined to a single locality.
According to the DMP, legal proceedings are being initiated against those arrested through cases filed at the relevant police stations. The detainees are being prepared to be produced before the appropriate courts as the formal legal process moves forward.
The operation brought together action against several categories of alleged offences, with police recovering firearms, ammunition, narcotics and suspected stolen property alongside making hundreds of arrests. The DMP said such operations are aimed at strengthening security and keeping the capital’s law-and-order situation under control.
