A Constable of the Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) has succumbed to his injuries after being struck by a bus whilst attempting to apprehend a suspected mugger in the city’s Ispahani Checkpost area.
The deceased officer, identified as Al Amin Sardar, passed away at approximately 04:00 BST on Monday, 5th October, in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH). Officer Al Amin, originally hailing from the Madaripur district, was attached to the CMP’s Special Armed Force (SAF) branch and was stationed on active duty at the time of the collision.
The fateful incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, 4th October. Whilst performing routine monitoring at the Ispahani Checkpost, Officer Al Amin spotted a suspect involved in snatching and swiftly moved to intercept him. As he attempted to detain the fleeing criminal, a speeding passenger bus knocked him down, inflicting severe physical trauma.
Colleagues immediately rushed the critically injured officer to CMCH, where medical personnel admitted him directly to the ICU. Despite intensive medical interventions over twenty-four hours, his condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to his demise early Monday morning.
Confirming the incident, Assistant Commissioner (Media) of the CMP, Aminur Rashid, stated that the collision transpired during an active operational chase. CMP Commissioner Hasan Mohammad Shawkat Ali expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family, commending Constable Al Amin’s bravery and supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.
Street robberies and snatching incidents along major arterial roads in Chittagong have prompted local law enforcement agencies to step up early-morning patrols and vehicle checkpoints across critical transit hubs. Metropolitan police checkpoints are regularly established on major thoroughfares to deter opportunistic criminals who target early commuters, freight handlers, and long-distance travelers.
Authorities have initiated an investigation into the fatal incident to identify the vehicle involved, ascertain whether the bus driver fled the scene, and track down the fleeing suspect officer Al Amin was pursuing. CMP officials confirmed that formal arrangements are underway to escort the officer’s remains back to his ancestral home in Madaripur for final rites following completion
