A thirty-year-old rickshaw puller has died from severe injuries in Pabna after being brutally assaulted by a group of individuals who suspected him of involvement in a local burglary.
The victim, identified as Suman, was the son of Rabi Hossain, a resident of Gachhpara village under the Pabna Sadar Upazila. According to family members, Suman was dumped near a shop in front of his residence on Sunday afternoon by an unidentified rickshaw driver. He was suffering from multiple grievous injuries across his body. Recognizing his critical state, his relatives rushed him home before transferring him to Pabna General Hospital as his condition deteriorated rapidly. Despite receiving medical care, Suman succumbed to his wounds at around 8:00 pm that evening.
Speaking on the incident, Tarikul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Pabna Sadar Police Station, stated that initial investigations suggest the violence stemmed from a recent burglary in the Bilbhaduri area of Sadar Upazila. A group of local residents allegedly abducted Suman earlier on Sunday under the suspicion that he was linked to the theft, subjecting him to severe physical torture.
When Suman lost consciousness and his health took a turn for the worse, the perpetrators hired a rickshaw to abandon him near his home, attempting to evade responsibility for the assault. Police have confirmed that while a formal case is yet to be registered by the deceased’s family, law enforcement officers have already identified several key suspects involved in the lynching. Active drives and raids are currently underway across various locations in the district to apprehend those responsible and bring them to justice.
Incidents of extrajudicial violence and mob justice triggered by minor theft allegations remain a persistent law enforcement challenge across several regions. Human rights advocates and legal experts frequently highlight that such vigilantism violates fundamental constitutional rights, denying victims the basic right to a fair trial under the legal system. Police authorities in Pabna have reiterated that strictly no individual will be allowed to take the law into their own hands, promising swift legal procedures against the culprits once arrested.
