An improvised locally made light gun and nine rounds of shotgun ammunition have been recovered from an abandoned jute mill in Siddhirganj, Narayanganj, during an operation by SRB-11. The force said the recovered cartridges were among ammunition looted from a police station in 2024.
The operation was conducted at the abandoned Monowara Jute Mill in the Ajibpur area of Siddhirganj at around 12.30am on Monday (5 October), according to SRB-11.
The force said a special team from its headquarters company launched the operation following a tip-off about the presence of suspected individuals and illegal arms at the abandoned industrial site.
As members of the law enforcement agency arrived, several people reportedly noticed their presence and fled the area. The operation team subsequently searched the premises and surrounding areas of the abandoned mill.
During the search, the team found a locally made light gun and nine rounds of shotgun cartridges lying abandoned. No arrests were reported in connection with the recovery.
The ammunition has drawn particular attention because the cartridges were initially identified as having been looted from a police station in 2024. However, the circumstances in which the ammunition reached the abandoned mill, as well as who had been keeping it there, were not immediately established.
The recovery of the cartridges could provide investigators with a lead in tracing the movement of ammunition that went missing during the earlier incident. Further investigation will be required to establish whether the recovered ammunition was intended for use in any criminal activity or had simply been concealed at the site.
Captain Rownak Erfan Khan, operations officer of SRB-11, said the force had recovered the locally made light gun and nine rounds of shotgun ammunition after conducting an operation based on confidential information.
He said the recovered firearm and ammunition had been handed over to Siddhirganj Police Station for further legal action.
The latest recovery comes as law enforcement agencies continue operations against illegal firearms and ammunition. Abandoned industrial premises can sometimes provide concealed locations for storing weapons, making searches based on specific intelligence an important part of efforts to recover illegal arms.
SRB-11 said its operations against illegal firearms and drugs would continue. Authorities are expected to examine the recovered weapon and ammunition as part of the subsequent investigation and take further legal measures in accordance with the findings.
