A 45-year-old woman was killed on the spot after being struck by a recklessly driven passenger bus on the Dhaka-Aricha highway in Manikganj Sadar upazila. The incident occurred around 3:00 pm on Monday, 5 October, near the Akij Gate area in Golra.
Police seized the bus involved in the crash and arrested its driver shortly after the collision.
The victim was identified as Anowara Begum, wife of Mir Hossain from Hargaj Balir Char village in Saturia upazila. She had travelled to the Golra area for personal errands earlier in the day.
Eyewitnesses and highway police reported that Begum was walking along the shoulder of the highway towards the Golra bus stand. As she attempted to cross the road shortly after passing the Akij Gate, a speeding passenger bus operated by Nilachal Paribahan attempted a risky overtake around another vehicle. The driver lost control and struck Begum with immense force, throwing her onto the tarmac. She sustained catastrophic injuries and died instantly at the scene.
The accident caused a brief traffic disruption along the busy arterial highway, which links the capital with western districts via the Paturia ferry terminal. Local residents and passers-by alerted the Golra Highway Police, who dispatched an emergency response team to recover the body and secure the site.
Following the initial inquest, police transferred the victim’s body to the morgue at Manikganj Sadar Hospital for a formal post-mortem examination.
Confirming the incident, Officer-in-Charge of Golra Highway Police Station, Md Selim Matubbar, stated that law enforcement officers acted swiftly to impound the Nilachal Paribahan bus and take its driver into custody. Matubbar added that legal proceedings under relevant road safety regulations are currently underway against the driver, while police complete formal documentation before releasing the body to the victim’s family for burial. Highway patrols have also been instructed to tighten speed enforcement along the Golra stretch.
