A man was shot dead in Khulna’s Rupsha upazila just fifteen days after filing a formal general diary with the police regarding severe death threats from his son’s alleged killers. The victim, Akhtar Dhali, was gunned down by unidentified assailants around 6:45 pm on Monday, 5 October, in Durjonimohol village under Aichgati union.
The killing comes exactly fifty days after Dhali’s 25-year-old son, Joy Dhali, was hacked and decapitated in the same village on the evening of 15 August. Following Joy’s murder, his mother, Nasima Begum, filed a murder case against thirteen individuals at Rupsha Police Station.
According to police records, Dhali had approached the authorities on 21 September seeking protection after key suspects released on bail began pressuring the family to withdraw the murder charges. In his written complaint, Dhali detailed an incident on the night of 18 September near the Senerbazar area, where four accused men—Munjil Sheikh, Murad Sheikh, Masud Moolya, and Ropa Moolya—confronted him. The men threatened to kill him if the lawsuit was not dropped immediately.
Dhali noted in the police entry that the accused individuals were walking free on High Court bail and actively terrorising his household. Despite filing the application on 21 September, official records show that Rupsha police registered the general diary two days later, on 23 September, under entry number 1412. No protective measures were provided to the family following the log.
Eyewitnesses said Dhali was sitting on a wooden bench outside a local tea shop near a mosque following evening prayers when gunshots shattered the quiet neighborhood. Panic ensued as locals scattered. Moments later, family members and residents found Dhali lying face down beside the bench in a pool of blood. He was rushed to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where attending doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
Officer-in-Charge of Rupsha Police Station, Anwar Zahid, confirmed the shooting and stated that law enforcement officers are investigating the murder from multiple angles to identify the perpetrators and establish the exact circumstances behind the attack.
