A local leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has been detained in Dhaka over allegations of running multiple extortion rackets and illegal syndicates across the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar and Mohammadpur areas. Members of the Special Response Battalion-2 (SRB-2) apprehended Mijanur Rahman Swapan, president of Ward No. 28 under the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar unit of the BNP, during an operation on Monday, 5 October.
Following his arrest, SRB-2 personnel handed Swapan over to the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station for further legal proceedings. The arrest was subsequently confirmed by senior officials of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
DMP Deputy Commissioner for Tejgaon Division, Ibn Mijan, stated that SRB officers detained Swapan after receiving specific allegations regarding his involvement in extortion. He added that the suspect was formally placed in police custody at the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station, where law enforcement officers are processing the case.
According to police and SRB sources, Swapan had allegedly built an extensive extortion network spanning several key sectors in the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar and Mohammadpur neighbourhoods. Investigators revealed that his operations targeted local ready-made garment factories, from which he extracted substantial sums under intimidation.
The allegations against Swapan also involve running a dominant syndicate controlling private ambulance services at the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital in Agargaon. The ring allegedly forced ambulance drivers to pay tolls while controlling access to patients seeking emergency transport.
Beyond institutional extortion, Swapan reportedly oversaw daily toll collections from street vendors operating along the newly constructed Agargaon road. Investigators further alleged that he collected regular monthly protection payments from illicit narcotics dealers operating in the Samabay slum, located adjacent to the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police confirmed that Swapan remains in custody as authorities prepare formal charges against him under relevant legal provisions. Police are currently evaluating additional complaints from local business owners and residents to ascertain the full extent of the extortion network.
