A twenty-five-year-old air conditioning technician lost his life on Tuesday morning following a violent compressor explosion inside a repair workshop in Dhaka’s Nayapaltan area. The deceased, identified as Jiban Barman, was a native of Bhatpara Gopalpur village in Gaibandha Sadar upazila and the son of Sachin Barman.
The tragic incident occurred around 10:30 am at MI Engineering Plus, an air-conditioning service centre located in Nayapaltan. According to family members and eyewitnesses, Jiban was performing routine maintenance and repair work on an air conditioning unit when the compressor unexpectedly ruptured, triggering a severe blast. The impact left him critically injured and bleeding profusely from multiple trauma wounds.
Colleagues and fellow workers at the shop rushed to his aid immediately after the blast, rescuing him from the debris and transporting him to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). Despite rapid medical intervention, attending doctors pronounced him dead at approximately 12:15 pm due to the severity of his injuries.
Inspector Md Habibur Rahman, in-charge of the DMCH Police Outpost, confirmed the casualty and stated that the body has been transferred to the hospital morgue for an autopsy. He added that the relevant police station has been duly informed to initiate an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Air conditioner compressor explosions during servicing represent a recurring hazard in urban workshops, often stemming from improper handling of high-pressure gases, electrical short circuits, volatile chemical reactions, or structural failure within aging units. While technician safety protocols mandate the use of protective gear, gas pressure monitoring, and specialized ventilation equipment during repairs, compliance across informal service workshops remains inconsistent. Local law enforcement authorities are expected to inspect the premises to examine whether proper safety standards and technical precautions were observed during the repair process.
