Sourav Ganguly is set to begin a new chapter in his Indian Premier League career after taking charge as head coach of Delhi Capitals ahead of the 2027 season. The former India captain has been a familiar figure around the franchise for several years, but his appointment marks his move into a more direct coaching role with the IPL side.
Ganguly has a long-standing association with Delhi Capitals. He joined the franchise as an adviser in 2019 and later became Director of Cricket for both the men’s and women’s Capitals teams after completing his tenure as president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
His latest appointment also follows a recent stint in franchise coaching outside India. Ganguly served as head coach of Pretoria Capitals in South Africa’s SA20 competition, gaining experience of managing a T20 side in a different franchise environment. He will now return to the IPL dugout with Delhi, a team he already knows well.
Ganguly replaces Hemang Badani, who served as Delhi Capitals’ head coach for the previous two seasons. The change gives the franchise a fresh coaching direction as it prepares for another attempt to challenge for its first IPL title.
Speaking about his new role, Ganguly said he was looking forward to taking on the responsibility of an IPL head coach. He described Delhi Capitals as a franchise close to his heart and pointed to the strong relationship he has developed with the organisation over the years.
The former India opener also highlighted his previous involvement with the franchise. Having worked closely with the owners, management, support staff and players, Ganguly already has an understanding of the environment in which he will operate.
That familiarity could prove valuable as preparations for the 2027 season get under way. Ganguly believes the squad contains a number of talented cricketers and has expressed his desire to build a strong, fearless side capable of producing consistent performances.
The appointment comes at an important stage for Delhi Capitals. Despite being one of the established teams in IPL history, the franchise is still waiting for its first championship. Punjab Kings are the only other team from the league’s early group of franchises that have yet to win the title.
Delhi came closest to ending that wait in 2020, when they reached the IPL final for the first time. Their campaign ultimately ended without the trophy, but the run remains the franchise’s best finish in the competition.
They were also impressive during the league stage in 2021, finishing at the top of the points table. However, they could not convert that strong regular-season performance into a place in the final. Since then, Delhi have failed to reach the play-offs.
Their most recent campaign ended with the Capitals sixth in the points table, with Axar Patel leading the side and Badani serving as head coach. The result underlined the need for greater consistency if the franchise is to challenge seriously for the title.
Ganguly therefore takes charge with a clear target: to turn Delhi’s long-standing potential into sustained success. His background as an international cricketer and captain, combined with his experience in cricket administration and franchise management, gives him a broad understanding of the demands surrounding a major T20 team.
For Delhi Capitals, the challenge will be to translate that experience into results on the field. The franchise has already reached a final and topped the league standings in the past, but the elusive trophy remains beyond its grasp.
The 2027 season will offer Ganguly the opportunity to change that narrative. With his familiarity with the organisation and his recent coaching experience in SA20, Delhi will hope the new appointment can provide the direction needed to mount a serious title challenge.
