Father Killed by Bus While Buying Daughter’s Birthday Cake

A father’s simple plan to buy a birthday cake for his daughter ended in tragedy when he was killed in a road accident in Shahrashti, Chandpur, on Thursday evening. Al Amin, 40, who worked in Saudi Arabia, was riding a motorcycle towards Hajiganj to buy the cake when a bus struck the vehicle. He was due to return to Saudi Arabia on Sunday morning.

The accident occurred at around 7pm on Thursday, 8 October, in the Moutabari area of Shahrashti upazila, along the Chandpur–Cumilla regional highway. Al Amin was a resident of Krishnapur village in the upazila.

According to Bahar Uddin, a relative of the deceased, Al Amin had one daughter and had left home to purchase a cake for her birthday. He was travelling by motorcycle towards Hajiganj when a bus ran into the vehicle in Moutabari. The collision left both Al Amin and another motorcycle passenger, identified as Hridoy, 19, seriously injured.

Local residents rushed to help the injured men and took them to Hajiganj Upazila Health Complex. However, doctors declared Al Amin dead upon arrival. Hridoy received medical treatment following the accident. No further details about his condition were immediately available.

Al Amin’s impending return to Saudi Arabia added to the tragedy for his family. Bahar Uddin said he was scheduled to leave for the Gulf country on Sunday morning. Before returning to his work abroad, Al Amin had gone out to buy a birthday cake for his daughter, a seemingly ordinary family errand that ended in an irreversible loss.

His death has left his family facing the pain of losing a loved one at a time that should have been marked by a child’s birthday celebration. The circumstances of the accident also highlight the vulnerability of motorcyclists on busy regional highways, where collisions involving larger vehicles can have devastating consequences.

Road safety remains a significant concern in Bangladesh, particularly on roads shared by buses, motorcycles and other vehicles. Maintaining safe distances, driving at appropriate speeds and observing traffic rules are essential to reducing the risk of serious collisions. For motorcyclists, the consequences of an impact with a larger vehicle can be especially severe.

Shahrashti Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mahbubur Rahman confirmed the incident and said preparations were under way to file a case in connection with the accident.

Further details about the circumstances leading to the collision and any subsequent legal action were not immediately available.

For Al Amin’s family, however, the immediate loss is painfully clear. A trip to buy a birthday cake became his final journey, leaving his daughter’s special day overshadowed by the death of her father.
