Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, a member of the BNP’s Standing Committee, has alleged that efforts are underway to delegitimise the Constitution that was established following Bangladesh’s Liberation War. He asserted that no country in the world allows an unelected government to amend its constitution, yet such an attempt is being made in Bangladesh.

He made these remarks on Saturday, 2 August, at a commemorative discussion and honouring event for families of July uprising martyrs, held at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB), marking the anniversary of the July mass uprising.

Remarks by Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed

Speaker Statement
Major Hafiz “There is no country where an unelected regime attempts to amend the constitution. The constitution, written through the Liberation War, is now being discredited.”
Criticism of Interim Government “The hopes of the July fighters were never fulfilled because the current government does not embody the spirit of July. In the past 17 years, no one within the regime has dared speak out against Sheikh Hasina’s misrule.”

Statement from BNP’s AZM Zahid Hossain

Speaking as a special guest, BNP Standing Committee member AZM Zahid Hossain stressed the need for judicial accountability to prevent fascist tendencies in future governments:

“Justice must be ensured in a way that prevents any future recurrence of fascist behaviour. Any crack in unity will open the door to authoritarianism.”
