A brutal mob lynching triggered by theft allegations in Jashore Saddar Upazila has resulted in the death of a 45-year-old man, left another severely injured, and prompted an active search for a third person who plunged into a body of water to escape the violence.
The victim who lost his life has been identified as Mizanur Rahman, a resident of Kaliakundi village under the Pashapol Union in Chaugachha Upazila. Moniruzzaman, aged 46, hailing from Ramchandrapur village in Jhikargachha Upazila, sustained critical injuries and is undergoing treatment at Jashore General Hospital. Meanwhile, emergency rescue teams are searching for 40-year-old Al Amin, a resident of Maheshpur Upazila in Jhenaidah and brother-in-law of the deceased, who remains missing after jumping into a nearby oxbow lake (baor) to evade the angry mob.
The deadly sequence of events unfolded late Saturday night in Chandutia village, located within the Deyara Union of Jashore Saddar Upazila. According to local residents, suspicions were raised in nearby Narangali village when the three men were accused of stealing an alamsadhu—a locally constructed motorised three-wheeler powered by a shallow-engine mechanism frequently used across rural Bangladesh for agricultural transport.
Alerted by residents of Narangali, locals in Chandutia intercepted the suspects. An angry crowd surrounded the men and subjected two of them to a severe physical beating. In a desperate bid to save his life, Al Amin leapt into the surrounding oxbow lake and disappeared underwater.
Police recovered the body of Mizanur Rahman around 10:30 am on Sunday morning and subsequently dispatched it to the Jashore General Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Inspector Kazi Babul Hossain of Kotwali Police Station confirmed the casualty figures, stating that a specialist diving team from the Fire Service and Civil Defence has been deployed to locate the missing suspect.
Incidents of mob violence and extrajudicial punishment on suspected theft remain a persistent law and order issue across rural regions. Local authorities have launched an investigation into the incident to identify those involved in the fatal assault and to restore order in the area.
