The Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB) has arrested two retired army officers under anti-terrorism and cyber security laws. The individuals have been identified as retired Brigadier General Debashish Kumar Barua and retired Lieutenant Kazi Gulshan Ara.
They were arrested on Sunday night, 11 October, according to the media division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). The police confirmed the arrests but did not immediately disclose detailed information about the specific allegations against them.
A DB source claimed that the two officers were suspected of involvement in an alleged conspiracy to create instability in the country. According to the source, investigators had also obtained information suggesting links between the officers and the Awami League, whose activities have been banned.
However, the authorities have yet to provide a detailed account of the alleged conspiracy or clarify the nature of the officers’ suspected involvement. No specific evidence supporting the allegations has been made public in the information available so far.
The DMP’s media division said further details would be disclosed later. Information about the specific provisions of the anti-terrorism and cyber security laws under which the officers were arrested has also not yet been provided.
The arrests come amid an investigation into alleged activities linked to efforts to destabilise the country. Further official statements are expected to clarify the grounds for the arrests, the evidence collected by investigators and the next steps in the legal proceedings.
An arrest does not, by itself, establish guilt. The allegations against the two retired officers will need to be assessed through the legal process, with the outcome depending on the evidence presented and the decisions of the court.
