Meherpur Police Chief Vows Crackdown On Illegal Arbitrations and Gangs

Meherpur’s newly appointed Superintendent of Police, Ali Haider Chowdhury, has issued a stern warning against extrajudicial arbitrations, juvenile gangs, and illicit gambling networks operating within the district. Addressing local journalists on Sunday afternoon, the police chief declared that traditional informal trials used to abuse, humiliate, or deprive citizens of legal remedies would no longer be tolerated alongside the formal justice system.
During the interactive exchange held in the conference room of the Superintendent of Police on Sunday, 11 October, SP Ali Haider Chowdhury underscored the necessity of upholding statutory legal procedures. He stated firmly that law enforcement officers handle criminal allegations, whilst courts deliver formal justice. Any attempt to run parallel arbitration systems that infringe upon constitutional rights or subject individuals to physical and emotional abuse will be met with swift legal action.
Beyond extrajudicial arbitrations, the police chief announced a zero-tolerance policy against drug trafficking, digital gambling platforms, and rising youth delinquency. He pledged to transform every police station across Meherpur into people-friendly service centres where citizens can lodge complaints without fear or harassment. Clear directives have already been issued to police personnel to ensure prompt and accountable service delivery.
Attending journalists raised serious concerns regarding localized crime, specifically pointing to online gambling rings, petty theft, narcotics distribution, cross-border smuggling, extortion, and the growing menace of juvenile gangs. SP Ali Haider Chowdhury assured the press corps that police units would initiate targeted drives to dismantle these criminal networks without delay, urging journalists to maintain active cooperation to foster a safer environment.
The meeting was attended by senior police leadership, including Additional Superintendent of Police Atiqul Haq and Additional Superintendent of Police Jaminur Rahman Khan, who serves as the media focal person for Meherpur District Police, alongside print and electronic media representatives.
