Man Found Dead Beside Sripur Pond as Family Alleges Foul Play

Police in Gazipur have retrieved the body of a 35-year-old man from a bamboo platform beside a pond in the Sripur municipality area, sparking a murder investigation following severe allegations of foul play from the victim’s family.

The deceased, identified as Sabuj Miah, was the son of the late Abul Hossain, a resident of Uzilab village under the Sripur municipal jurisdiction. Local residents stumbled upon his inanimate body resting on a makeshift bamboo platform—commonly used by villagers as a shaded sitting spot—early on Monday morning (12 October). Shocked by the discovery, neighbours immediately alerted the local police station.

According to relatives and family members, Sabuj had dined at his family residence on Sunday evening before stepping outside into the neighbourhood. He failed to return home that night, leaving his family increasingly anxious as the hours passed. Their worst fears were confirmed the following morning when neighbours notified them of a body discovered near the local pond. Relatives rushed to the scene and positively identified the deceased as Sabuj.

Family members firmly maintain that his death was not accidental, insisting instead that he was the victim of a premeditated homicide. Relatives disclosed that Sabuj had developed a severe addiction to mobile-based online gambling in recent months and had frequently associated with a group of local youths known for rowdy and dubious behaviour. The family alleges that these associates lured Sabuj out of his home on Sunday night before orchestrating his murder over disputes potentially tied to gambling debts or interpersonal conflicts.

Officers from Sripur Police Station arrived promptly at the site to secure the area, document the scene, and dispatch the body to the local hospital morgue for a detailed post-mortem examination to establish the precise cause and timing of death.

Addressing the incident, Shahinur Alam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sripur Police Station, confirmed that law enforcement personnel recovered the body from a raised bamboo seating platform adjoining the pond. He stated that police investigators are examining every angle of the case thoroughly, including the victim’s recent communications, social circle, and financial dealings. Official legal proceedings and targeted arrests will follow as soon as the autopsy report and preliminary findings yield concrete evidence regarding those responsible for the crime.
