A tribunal in Sylhet has sentenced a young man to death for raping a teenage girl at her home in Gowainghat upazila. Judge Rubaiya Yasmin of the Sylhet Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal delivered the verdict in a packed courtroom on Monday afternoon in the presence of the accused.
The convict, identified as Abdullah Miah, is the son of Montaz Ali from Bogaiya Haor (Dakshinpara) village under Rustampur Union in Gowainghat upazila. Public Prosecutor Advocate Moshtaq Ahmad of the relevant tribunal formally confirmed the judgment following the court session.
Case documentation reveals that the crime took place in 2022 when the victim was alone in her residence in Bogaiya village. Taking advantage of her isolation, Abdullah, who lived in the immediate neighbourhood, forcibly entered the house and assaulted her. Following the assault, the victim’s family approached the Gowainghat Police Station and lodged a formal rape case, naming Abdullah as the sole accused.
Police investigators initiated a detailed inquiry into the incident, gathering medical records, forensic evidence, and witness testimony before submitting a formal charge sheet to the tribunal. Upon reviewing the police report, the tribunal accepted the charges and officially commenced trial proceedings against the defendant.
During the trial process, the prosecution presented cross-examinations, witness testimonies, and physical evidence to substantiate the charge. Public Prosecutor Moshtaq Ahmad stated that the prosecution succeeded in establishing the defendant’s guilt beyond reasonable doubt. Consequently, the judge handed down the maximum statutory penalty under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
Following the announcement of the capital sentence, law enforcement personnel escorted Abdullah under tight security back to Sylhet Central Jail, where he will await further judicial procedures regarding his conviction. Legal experts noted that such stringent judicial outcomes underscore the court’s stance against gender-based violence and reinforce the rule of law within local communities.
