Experienced hard-hitting batter Sabbir Rahman has earned a surprise call-up to the national setup as the Bangladesh Cricket Board announced a seven-member squad for the upcoming Hong Kong Sixes tournament. Pace bowler Abu Hider Rony has been appointed to lead the side in the fast-paced, six-a-side international competition.
The tournament is scheduled to take place between 30 October and 2 November at the Tin Kwong Road Recreation Ground in Hong Kong. A total of 12 nations will compete in this ultra-short edition of the game, which returns to the international calendar after a multi-year hiatus.
Bangladesh have been placed in Group B alongside Asian rivals Sri Lanka and Scotland. Rony’s side must navigate past these two opponents in the group stage to secure a favorable path into the knockout rounds.
The tournament structure ensures that every team advances to a specific tier based on their group stage standings:
-
Group winners will advance directly to the semi-finals of the main Cup competition.
-
Teams finishing second in their respective groups will progress to the Plate competition semi-finals.
-
Third-placed teams will feature in the Bowl competition.
Sabbir Rahman’s inclusion brings considerable power-hitting experience to the line-up. Long recognized for his aggressive batting and ability to clear the boundary in death-over scenarios, the middle-order batter will look to leverage this platform to re-establish his credentials on the international circuit. Left-arm seamer Mehedi Hasan Rana and pace bowler Mrittunjoy Chowdhury will bolster the bowling unit alongside skipper Rony, while promising young talents complete the squad.
The official seven-member Bangladesh squad for the Hong Kong Sixes comprises Abu Hider Rony (Captain), Sabbir Rahman, Mrittunjoy Chowdhury, Samiun Basheer, Chowdhury Md Jishan, Ahrar Amin, and Habibur Rahman Sohan.
