A 20-year-old man has died following an attack linked to a longstanding boundary dispute in Kendua upazila of Netrokona, less than a week after returning to Bangladesh from Saudi Arabia. His father, Enamul Haque, 45, was also seriously injured in the incident and remains under medical treatment, with relatives describing his condition as critical.
The attack took place at around 2 pm on Tuesday, 13 October, in Puranbari village under Roailbari Union of Kendua upazila.
According to police and local sources, a dispute over the boundary of a homestead had been ongoing between Enamul Haque and his cousin, Bokul Mia. The tension reportedly escalated on Tuesday when people associated with Bokul allegedly attacked Enamul’s house with locally made weapons.
Both Enamul and his son, Abir Hossain, sustained serious injuries during the assault. Local residents rescued the injured father and son and rushed them to Kendua Upazila Health Complex for initial treatment.
However, as their conditions were critical, doctors referred both patients to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for advanced medical care.
Abir died while undergoing treatment at the hospital at around 8 pm on Tuesday. His father, Enamul, remains hospitalised, and relatives have expressed concern over his condition.
Abir had returned to Bangladesh from Saudi Arabia only about a week before the incident. His death so soon after coming home has plunged his family into mourning and shocked residents of the village.
The incident has also drawn attention to the potentially devastating consequences of disputes over land and property boundaries. Such disagreements can escalate into serious violence when they are not resolved through lawful means. However, the precise circumstances surrounding the attack and the extent of each person’s involvement will need to be established through the police investigation.
Confirming the incident, Kendua Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Tariqul Islam said police had been deployed to the scene following the attack. He added that the situation was currently under control and that the necessary legal proceedings were under way.
No further details were immediately available regarding arrests or the formal filing of a case in connection with the incident. The investigation is expected to establish the circumstances of the attack and identify those responsible.
