Two Motorcycle Riders Killed in Truck Collision in Brahmanbaria

Two men were killed after a truck struck their motorcycle on the Dhaka–Sylhet Highway in Sarail, Brahmanbaria, on Wednesday morning. The accident occurred at around 7.30am in the Baishamora area while the motorcycle was stationary in a traffic jam.

The deceased were identified as Anup Kumar, 55, and Anwarul Azim, 40. Preliminary information indicates that both men were residents of Narsingdi district town.

Abdul Halim, officer-in-charge of Khatihata Highway Police Station, said the two men were travelling from Narsingdi towards Sylhet on a motorcycle. When they reached Baishamora, they had to stop because of traffic congestion.

A truck approaching from behind then ran over the motorcycle, leaving both riders seriously injured. Anup Kumar died at the scene. Anwarul Azim was rescued and taken to Brahmanbaria District Sadar Hospital, where he later died while receiving treatment.

Police seized the truck following the collision and took it to Khatihata Highway Police Station. However, the driver fled the scene, according to the police.

Mr Halim said preparations were under way to take legal action in connection with the accident. No further details about the driver’s identity or any subsequent arrest were immediately available.

The Dhaka–Sylhet Highway is a major transport route linking the capital with Sylhet and other parts of the country. It carries a steady flow of passenger buses, goods lorries, private cars and motorcycles. Traffic congestion on such busy roads can create dangerous situations, particularly when vehicles approach stationary traffic without maintaining a safe distance or reducing speed in time.

Motorcyclists are especially vulnerable in collisions involving heavy vehicles, as they have little physical protection against the force of an impact. Maintaining a safe following distance, reducing speed near congested areas and remaining alert to stationary vehicles are essential precautions for drivers.

The deaths of the two men have once again highlighted the risks faced by road users on busy highways. Establishing the precise circumstances of the collision and taking appropriate legal action will be important as the authorities proceed with the case.
