One Injured as Rival Youth Gangs Clash in Public Gunfight

A man sustained gunshot injuries when rival criminal gangs opened fire in broad daylight in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area on Thursday night. The violent confrontation occurred shortly after 9:00 pm at a busy three-way intersection near the Bosila Bridge, sending shockwaves through the local neighbourhood.
Eyewitnesses reported that the gunfire erupted in front of Mayur Villa, a prominent building in the Bosila Bridge vicinity. Members of a notorious local juvenile gang known as the ‘Sabbir Group’ engaged in a heated altercation with a rival outfit. The verbal dispute escalated rapidly into a armed clash, with both sides pulling firearms and firing indiscriminately in the middle of the street.
The unexpected volley of shots created widespread panic amongst shopkeepers, commuters, and residents. Local businesses swiftly pulled down their shutters as bystanders scrambled for cover to escape the crossfire. During the chaos, an unidentified individual was struck by a bullet at the scene and collapsed to the ground. The assailants fled immediately after the shooting. Local residents rushed the victim to a nearby medical facility for emergency treatment, though the individual’s identity and condition remain unconfirmed.
Law enforcement authorities arrived promptly at the location to secure the area and assess the situation. Officers from the local police station have commenced a preliminary investigation, gathering forensic evidence and reviewing CCTV footage from surrounding commercial establishments to identify the gunmen.
While the exact motive behind the shootout has not been officially confirmed, preliminary findings suggest the turf war stems from rivalry over territorial control, extortion, and local drug trade dominance. The Mohammadpur and Bosila belts have witnessed a concerning rise in teenage gang activities in recent months, prompting frequent police drives and joint operations. Police have intensified patrolling in the area and launched drives to apprehend members of the Sabbir Group and their rivals involved in the shooting.
