Real Madrid produced an impressive performance to beat Sevilla 4–1 at the Santiago Bernabéu on Sunday, with Kylian Mbappé stealing the spotlight through a brace that included a remarkable Panenka penalty. Head coach José Mourinho praised his side’s overall display, highlighting their control of the match, attacking quality and individual brilliance.
The hosts started confidently and took the lead in the 30th minute through Arda Güler. The Turkish midfielder finished a well-worked attacking move, giving Real Madrid the breakthrough they had been seeking. Seven minutes later, Mbappé doubled the advantage with a superb finish, putting further pressure on Sevilla’s defence.
Real Madrid went into half-time with a two-goal cushion after controlling much of the first period. Their attacking movement and ability to create opportunities made it difficult for the visitors to establish a foothold in the contest.
Mbappé continued to pose a threat after the interval. In the 63rd minute, the French forward won a penalty after being fouled inside the Sevilla box. He then calmly converted from the spot with a Panenka, delicately chipping the ball over the goalkeeper. The audacious finish demonstrated his composure and confidence in a high-pressure situation.
Sevilla managed to reduce the deficit in the 80th minute through Manu Bueno, briefly raising hopes of a comeback. However, Real Madrid responded almost immediately. Just two minutes later, Diomande scored their fourth goal with a powerful finish after advancing with the ball, restoring the hosts’ three-goal advantage and effectively settling the contest.
The 4–1 victory left Mourinho pleased with both the result and the manner in which his team secured it.
Speaking after the match, the Portuguese coach described the performance as an excellent one for Real Madrid. He praised several players for displaying a high standard of football and stressed that his side had maintained control from the opening whistle to the final minutes.
Mourinho also highlighted Real Madrid’s dominance in possession against what he regarded as a strong Sevilla side. In his assessment, the team’s control of the ball was justified by the quality of their performance, while the goals reflected the attacking potential within the squad.
The coach also addressed his decision to make changes to the starting line-up. He explained that the selections had been made after careful consideration, adding that several players had strong claims to a place in the starting eleven. According to Mourinho, deciding who deserved to play could not be reduced to a simple mathematical calculation.
He further praised the team’s ability to create numerous chances and deliver the ball effectively to the wingers, allowing them to exploit spaces in the opposition defence.
For Real Madrid, the emphatic win provided another encouraging performance at home and strengthened the team’s confidence ahead of upcoming fixtures. Mbappé’s clinical finishing was a major feature of the evening, but the collective display also underlined the importance of effective build-up play, movement off the ball and sustained attacking pressure.
Sevilla, meanwhile, will need to address their defensive vulnerabilities after struggling to contain Real Madrid’s forward line. Although they found the net once, their brief attempt to recover from a three-goal deficit was quickly undermined by the hosts’ response.
The result offered Mourinho plenty of reasons for satisfaction, with Mbappé’s spectacular penalty serving as one of the match’s defining moments.
