Afghanistan’s Under-19 team mounted a formidable batting effort to set Bangladesh a steep target of 305 runs in the second One Day International (ODI) of the youth series currently underway at Al Amerat, Oman. Having claimed victory in the opening fixture of the bilateral series, Bangladesh’s junior side faces a formidable test of resolve and composure in their attempt to secure back-to-back wins.
Opting to bat first after winning the toss on Monday, Afghanistan’s top and middle order laid down an impressive benchmark. Contributions flowed continuously from the top seven batsmen, ensuring the team built momentum without suffering prolonged lulls. Opener Abidullah Nadarjan chipped in with a steady 23, while his partner Faridullah Ihsas struck a disciplined 51 to lay a solid foundation. Sobhan Zakhail maintained the tempo with 27, paving the way for Noman Salarzai to anchor the innings with a brilliant, team-high 76 runs.
Hamza Khan bolstered the middle order with 29, before the lower-order tail accelerated late in the innings. Tahir Sarwari smashed 43 off just 31 deliveries, complemented by an explosive 11-ball 21 from Amir Hamza. By the end of their allotted 50 overs, Afghanistan reached a imposing total of 304 for the loss of nine wickets.
Among the Bangladeshi bowlers, Rubaid Islam Rezon delivered a standout spell, taking four key wickets to restrict further damage. His teammate JK Shorif Siam provided solid support at the opposite end, claiming two scalps as the Tigers worked to contain the Afghan late-overs charge.
In response, Bangladesh began their pursuit needing to score at a rate of over six runs an over. The run chase got off to an active start courtesy of the opening pair, who assembled a century partnership. Opener Abdullah Al Muhi completed a well-crafted half-century before departing for 50, whilst his partner Zarif Saim contributed a useful 22 before being dismissed.
With the score standing at 101 for two, the middle order stepped up to steady the pursuit. Al Amin Roni and Ehsan Al Munir swiftly calibrated their strokeplay to keep the required run rate manageable. As the match progressed to 26.1 overs, Bangladesh’s score reached 169 for two, with Al Amin unbeaten on 63 and Munir standing firm on 26, keeping the young Tigers firmly in contention for an impressive victory.
