Egypt Coach and Zico Banned Following Argentina Clash

Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan, national team director Ibrahim Hassan and forward Mostafa Zico have been handed suspensions by FIFA following their criticism of the referee after Egypt’s 3-2 defeat to Argentina at the World Cup.

Hossam and Ibrahim have each received three-match bans, while Zico has been suspended for five matches. The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) announced the sanctions on Monday, confirming that the disciplinary action followed comments made after the match.

The defeat sparked anger within the Egyptian camp over several key refereeing decisions. Hossam blamed the referee for mistakes that he believed contributed to Egypt’s elimination, while Zico made an offensive remark about the match official during a post-match interview.

The 60-year-old Hossam was punished for criticising the referee’s decisions. His twin brother, Ibrahim, who serves as the national team’s director, received the same suspension.

Zico, however, was handed a longer ban after reportedly describing the referee as an ‘oppressor’ in comments following the match.

Disputed Goal and Penalty Appeal Fuel Anger

The controversy centred on two major incidents during Egypt’s encounter with Argentina.

One of Egypt’s goals was disallowed after the referee ruled that a foul had occurred during the attacking move leading up to the finish. The decision frustrated the Egyptian players and coaching staff, who questioned the officiating.

Further controversy emerged late in the match, when the score stood at 2-2. Egypt’s players appealed for a penalty, but the referee rejected their claims. Argentina eventually secured a 3-2 victory, leaving Egypt to reflect on a defeat overshadowed by disputes over the match officials.

The incidents prompted strong reactions from members of the Egyptian camp, with Hossam publicly questioning the referee’s performance and Zico making a more personal attack on the official.

However, FIFA’s referees committee chief, Pierluigi Collina, has defended the role of match officials amid the criticism. He has warned that accusations and hostile reactions towards referees can create serious concerns, including potential threats to officials and their families.

Egypt Considering Legal Options

Following the announcement of the suspensions, the Egyptian Football Association said it had requested a detailed explanation of the disciplinary committee’s decisions.

The association intends to examine the reasons behind the sanctions and assess the available legal options before deciding whether to lodge an appeal. No final decision on an appeal has yet been announced.

The suspensions could create difficulties for Egypt as the team prepares for its upcoming international fixtures. Hossam and Ibrahim are expected to miss the November matches against Malawi, which form part of the next stage of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

Their absence could affect both the team’s preparation and its management during an important period. There are also concerns that the two brothers could miss Egypt’s opening fixture during the March international window, depending on the applicable suspension arrangements.

Zico faces a longer spell on the sidelines. His five-match ban could keep him out of action until June, potentially limiting Egypt’s attacking options during the coming months.

The disciplinary action highlights FIFA’s willingness to sanction coaches, officials and players over their conduct towards match officials. While Egypt has expressed its intention to examine the ruling, it remains unclear whether the association will formally appeal or whether the suspensions will be altered.

For now, Hossam, Ibrahim and Zico must contend with the consequences of their post-match remarks as Egypt prepares for its upcoming international commitments.
